Words at the Opening of Cloth & Memory {2} – 17th August 2013

The Arts Council’s clarion call is ‘Great Art for Everyone’. And this is exactly the sort of project the Arts Council should be funding to make that grand aspiration a reality.

In Cloth & Memory {2} we see the essential ingredients of a great project: a big idea brought together by a team of highly skilled and inspired people – each bringing their own networks of knowledge and expertise – working in true partnership and collaboration to enable the finest artists to mine the depths of their creativity in response to an awe-inspiring setting.

This is a Yorkshire mill.  Yorkshire men and women – particularly women – spent their working lives painstakingly creating ‘our second skin’.

Today, artists from across the world enter this space, look out on a Yorkshire landscape and respond to those painstaking lives to create something which brings the global into the local.

Sincere thanks to Lesley, June and Jen; to the companies who gave such great support in kind; to the museums and universities who gave so generously of their time and resources; and to Salts Mill.

But most of all thanks to the artists.  When the passion, skill and insight of the artist glows through the work as it does in Cloth & Memory  we are in the presence of Great Art for Everyone and it is the greatest privilege to be a funder.
